Fake ID's

             During one four-week period in Florida, police made a concerted effort to nab teenagers with fake IDs. USA Today reports that 350 were arrested for carrying fake IDs, 1200 for underage drinking, and in all, they confiscated 10,000 fake ID cards (Leinwand). This single incident points to the perceived social problem of young people using fake IDs to partake of delights and privileges accorded to the generations that precede them. This is a social problem created by social constructs that dispense power and privilege to the generation preceding the teens themselves. With age comes power and with power comes privilege. Within this social framework, American teens have found ways to jumpstart themselves into adulthood with fake IDs. Often the social problem is acknowledged only when disastrous results occur: the drunken highway accident, property damage, wayward teens, and more. The constructs of this social problem are sociocultural as well as technological. It should be noted, however, that while society at large may consider fake IDs a social problem, the problem to the teens is how to partake of activities forbidden because of their age. They feel discriminated against and seek to set things straight. On the other hand, teenage drinking may consist mostly of victimless crimes. The teen gets the headache, and society marches on. Thus, the definition of a social problem is altered by the perspectives of the definers. American society, via the media, pushes teens to want the forbidden fruit of alcohol, drugs, sex, and easy money. American society also sets laws or cultural norms to prevent teen access to these things. For the teens, the problem is to get around the one to get the other. The differentiation of power between and among groups constructs the parameters of a potential social problem.
