As the tale tells, for as long as we can remember we have wanted some sort of "high." Even though coffee was giving us that "high" we didn't know where it was coming from. Caffeine was not isolated from coffee until 1820 (Cohis 2). We now find caffeine in many things such as; cacao pods, hence in cocoa, chocolate products, in kola nuts, used in the making of cola drinks, and in the Ilex plant, which from the popular South American drink yerba mate is prepared (Cohis 1). Overall our main source of caffeine originates from coffee beans at 54% and tea leaves at 43% (Gilbert 27).
Caffeine itself is defined as a stimulating alkaloid found in tea and coffee plants (Ehrlich 72). Of those coffee plants, or coffee beans, there are mainly two types in which we get our caffeine source (Cohis1). The first is coffea robusta. These plants grow mostly in Indonesia and Africa. These beans have about 2.2% caffeine (Cohis 1). The second type of plant is coffea arabica, which grow mostly in Central and South America. The beans themselves contain slightly less caffeine, about 1.1% (Cohis 1). Although these are the two main types of coffee plants, ¾ of all coffee cultivated comes from the arabica species. The robusta species, however, takes up more than a quarter of all caffeine in coffee because it contains twice as much caffeine (Cohis 2).
There are many products that contain caffeine that we use everyday. A 50-gram bar of chocolate contains between 5 and 60 mg of caffeine, increasing with the quality of the chocolate (Cohis 1). Even one single cup of hot chocolate contains about 4mg of caffeine (Cohis 1).
