Child Poverty seems to be one of the major problems in the United States. Here I will tell about different authors' points of view on child poverty and how child poverty was created, the effects and some of the solutions the authors had came up with.
             I will start off by introducing the authors I will be talking about. Jonathon Marshall wrote the article "Child Poverty Is Abundant" as a summary of a larger report done by researchers Timothy Smeeding and Lee Rainwater on the statistics of child poverty in the United States. Arloc Sherman (born 1965) is senior program associate in the Family Income Division of the Children's Defense Fund, and wrote an article "From Wasting America's Future: The Children's Defense Fund Report on the Cost of Child poverty"(1994) which was basically and opinion of his that meant more to him then. Also the author Duncan Lindsey is a professor at the school of Public Policy and Social Research at the University of California, Los Angeles. His most recent book, on which this summary is a part of, is "The Welfare of Children"(1994). Finally, the last author I will be mentioning is Lisbeth B. Schorr. Schorr is a child and family policy analyst and teaches social medicine at Harvard University Medical School.
             Child poverty has been increasing dramatically through the years. Our country alone is at 21.7 percent, that is the highest percentage in our world. Sherman believes poverty has been increasing because of the low hourly wages people were being paid were not keeping to pace with inflation. Almost all the authors, Lindsey, Sherman and Schorr all believe that the many single parent families we have in the United states has a major effect. They agree on having an absent parent, not being there to help support the children, usually leaves the single parent dread in bills to pay, food to feed for the children, clothes to put on their backs, including themselves.
