In a case of survival of the fittest, does the natural man lose out to the civilized man? The natural man has none of the breeding or skills of the noble or civilized man. The natural man is pure impulse rather than planning. This flaw leaves the civilized man with the upper hand. This is why the civilized man (Antonio) is able to overthrow Prospero in the beginning.
             To begin this discussion, we must first define the terms of natural and civilized man. A natural man is a person that operates merely on sheer impulse. Their sole purpose is to achieve survival or pleasure. The civilized man is one that operates on thought or rationalization. They are often governed by complex feelings of guilt, shame, pride and jealousy. They are also ruled by a collection of standards laid down by their societies.
             The natural man as portrayed by Caliban is savage, unrestrained and brutal, incapable of higher reasoning and lacking the innate intelligence for nurture to stick. For him to learn, he must first be conditioned. He behaves in accordance with his instinctual urges, not with any sort of reasoning above that of the most elementary, and is incapable of understanding the true consequences of his acts.
             Caliban acts against Prospero, because he feels that he has been wronged. He feels that he has been robbed of his birthright and acts against Prospero out of rage or anger, a basic instinct of the natural man. Antonio on the other hand has made a conscious decision to be evil.
             Prospero has done no wrong to Antonio and yet he still chooses to plot against him. He acts out, not of anger or need for survival, but out of jealousy. This is a trait not known by the natural man.
