Cloning--Our Next Generation

oved from an individual. This method has been successful on a sheep; however, it was not tried on humans until December of 1998. If therapeutic cloning were to become possible, adult DNA cloning would probably be used as the first step in the procedure. Therapeutic cloning would probably involve the growing of replacement organs such as the heart, liver, pancreas, skin, etc. from a sample of a person's DNA. Therapeutic cloning has not yet been accomplished in a laboratory or clinic. However, a general approach by which it might be done in the future has been mapped out as follows. First, a DNA sample would be taken from a sick patient. Next, the sample would be inserted into an embryo in place of its original DNA. Stem cells would then be taken from the embryo. This is a destructive step, which kills the embryo in the process. The stem cells or cells that theoretically can develop into many organs or body parts would be encouraged to grow into whatever tissue or organ is needed to treat the patient. The tissue or organ would be transplanted to the patient. Once this step has been reached, there are four main obstacles to overcome. Stem cells must first be successfully isolated and grown in the laboratory. They must then be encouraged to develop into specific cell types. Then, they must be proven useable in treating patients with diseases, injuries, or disorders. Finally, the transplanted tissue must develop normally and must not represent significant risks to
