When the time came for them, as Leamy says, "to play the game", which was to fight, that they did it not knowing if they were going to live or die. They went out and fought, many losing their lives. It was tough to continue; however you fought to live. Also, he writes about being the only one of his crew to survive the war. He writes that it is hard to go on with his life because he was the only one that lived the "dream of the Ideal." At the end he prays to God to give him the strength that when he dies to look his friends in the face that died in the war knowing they did not get to live their dreams and he did. This poem is easy to understand and easy to comprehend. That is why it was published, to give the public a sense of the feeling of war.
