Constructivist Approach

             Did you know in the 1980's a constructivist approach to learning had become popular with many educators? This approach is based upon the supposition that as learners interact with the world. They construct their own experience and knowledge. Therefore, learning is viewed as the "product of self organization" and the learning process is supported by the two principles: first, knowledge is not passively received, but actively constructed by the learner, and second learners generate understanding when they relate prior knowledge to present experience. Constructivism is a philosophy of learning that offers and perspective on how people-all people learn all the time. Constructivism tells us more about learning than about teaching. Constructivist views emphasize understanding and building on student thinking. However, it has important reference for teaching. Goals of constructivism is helping students become independent learners and thinkers. Explore important questions and build and interrogate deeper understanding of knowledge. From a constructivist perspective the curriculum is designed to promote and support the child's natural inquiry about how the world works. The development of logical thinking skills in an ultimate outcome, yet the focus is not giving to the "deficits" apparent in the child's ordering of the world.
             Constructivist views place more demands on teachers and children than do unguided discovery approach. Teachers should create a constructivist classroom include encouraging students autonomy and initiative, using raw data and primary sources as well as physical material to illustrate concepts and using constructivist language (create, analyze, product, classify) to frame student tasks. Other pointers include allowing student questions to alter class content and inquiring about student concepts of phenomena before sharing their own understanding.
