By the time Samuel was sixteen, he was still working with his brother for which he wrote his first published sketches and continued working as a printer.
             In 1853 at the age of 18, Clemens left Hannibal and went to New York where he worked as a printer. During his trip he published travel letters in the Hannibal Journal. Samuel also worked at his trade as a printer in later years while living in St. Louis, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and New York.
             In 1857 he became a pilot on a Mississippi river steamboats, and in 1861 he went to Nevada Territory as private secretary to his brother, Orion, who had been appointed secretary of the new territory. Because Orion could not aford the fare, Samuel decided he would become the unofficial secretary to the new secretary and pay the way for both of them. The brothers went up the Missouri River to St. Joseph and on July 26, 1861, they were off by stagecoach to Carson City. They reached the new capital of the Nevada Territory on August 14.
