Gay Marriage

             "I now pronounce you Wife and Wife." It is a phrase that can soon make history, our history. One of the most controversial topics today, gay marriages is an issue everybody has an opinion on, myself included. Is it right? How is it going to change our society? How is it going to change our children? How is it going to change our economy? Those questions and many others arise a heated debate about homosexuals' rights in our country. All of such questions, however, boil down to a single issue of recognizing gay marriage under law. Here is my stand on the subject.
             One of the most popular arguments against same-sex marriages focuses on the religious view of the marriage as a procreative union between a man and a woman. Even our President George W. Bush explains his opposition as a belief in the sanctity of the marriage. But marriage today is not about procreation, it is about the love between two adults who want to live in a committed relationship, with or without children. And historically, marriages have been changing. Initially, married women were owned and controlled by their husbands and had about as much rights as the cattle. Interracial marriages were illegal in the U.S. until the late sixties based on "unnaturality" of those relationships. The concept of a "traditional" family has changed unrecognizably along with the rest of the world throughout the centuries. Those standards just simply do not hold true against the present times. A church's teachings about the definition and "sanctity" of marriage should have no place in making federal laws. The First Amendment holds the separation of church and state. So essentially, there is no argument here at all. Religiously motivated discrimination is of the worst kind and we, as a technologically advanced, educated society should understand that.
