From Inspiration to Craftwork

             Getting a burst of inspiration is important, but the billion dollars question is where to find the magic of inspiration. As Peter Elbow puts it in his essay Freewriting, nobody can just sit around to wait for a great idea to show up. Inspirations aren't interested in writers who sit around but not write. They are interested in writing writer. A big misconception about famous writers is that they all have inspirations surrounding them. In fact, their gifts of inspiration don't have to arrive on their pen specifically. Instead, inspirations are all around us, just like diamonds and jewels, waiting to be plucked. But they require that we hone our senses, pay attention to their ordinary and routine. One way to develop awareness is to practice freewriting as Peter Elbow described in his book Writing without Teacher. During freewriting, writers can observe the world around them closely and listen to their own intuition. Writer will then become more effectively when they tap into their intuition and subconscious, the deeper parts of their mind. The English poet Percy Shelley said "One after another, the greatest writer, poets and artist confirm the fact that their work came to them from beyond the threshold of intuition". So while packing writer's toolbox to start a great story, anyone should slow down for just a moment and look around. Then pick up a pen and engage in the act of writing. But never try to write an editable writing, but a non-editable freewriting, or a flow of their awareness. These non-editable freewritings will deepen writer's senses. These freewritings will prevent inspiration to rush by without leaving any trace while the writers desperately look for them. These freewriting will also bring room to writer's mind to shape their inspiration. Freewriting rewards writers with detail that they can insert into their writing.
