Bronte's Wuthering Heights is an unforgettable story of love and hate, where human emotions and passions are presented through a range of characters. Emily Bronte's novel depicts the harsh, wild and uncontrollable nature of love; revolving a possessive, yet contaminated relationship amongst Heathcliff and Catherine. The young couple, develops a mutual connection with one another, early in there lives. As they grow old, they become more and more dependent upon one another. However, years of obsession and grief are to follow after Catherine's self-centred decision to marry for status and wealth, instead of love. Consequently Catherine dies forlorn and remiss, while Heathcliff suffers intolerably without her. The passions of these characters eventually lead to the great acts of obsession, and madness, creating a very intense, tragic relationship.
             Catherine and Heathcliff clearly establish a strong bond very young in their lives, when the orphaned Heathcliff is brought into the household. All the other members of the household were opposed to the introduction of this strange boy, except for Catherine, who became "...very fond of Heathcliff". During their time spent together, Catherine learns to love and protect him completely. Heathcliff becomes upset when Catherine is forced to remain at Thrushcross Grange, the Linton's home, after her injury. He reminds Catherine just how much he took notice of her: "The crosses are for the evenings you have spent with the Linton's, the dots for those spent with me. Do you see? I've marked every day." Heathcliff falls into an intense unbreakable love with Catherine; he tells Nelly that "she is so immeasurably superior to them – to everybody on earth."
