Although the racquet sports badminton and squash would seem to be alike, they are actually nothing alike at all. About the only thing that these games have in common is that they are both played with a racquet.
Firstly, I'd like to point out the obvious in saying that these two sports are played in completely different areas. Badminton is played in an open court with lines marking the boundaries, whereas Squash is played in a square room that is completely enclosed. In badminton, there is a net which separates the players; there are no boundaries for players in squash.
The racquets and balls are very different. In Badminton, the racquets are very lightweight, with a thin frame and fine string. The ball used is called a "birdie", it is a rubber end attached to fins which give it a cone shape, the enables is to move slowly. In squash, the racquets are heavier, with a thicker frame and stronger string. The ball is thick and hollow rubber which enables it to travel at high speeds but allows very little bounce.
The object of the game of badminton is for the birdie to never hit the floor or go out of play. The object of squash is for the ball to never bounce more than once or go above the "out" line.
The rules of both games have the same idea in mind; they both declare a victor after a set of games has taken place (ex. 2 of 3). In both games, the server is the only one that can obtain a point, the opponent must make the server lose his/her serve before they are able to serve (and score). To score in badminton, (must be serving) you must make the birdie fall into the opponent's court or have the opponent hit the birdie out of bounds. To score in squash, (must be serving) you must make the opponent hit the ball above the "out" line or below the Tin line or you must hit the ball off the front wall and bounce twice before the opponent hits it.
The service is similar in both games, however still different. In Badminton, y
