Romeo And Juliet

             Lord Capulet, the Nurse, and the Friar are responsible, in part, for the tragic end to Romeo and Juliet's lives. Lord Capulet plays a crucial role in the destruction of Juliet's mental and emotional states; he disregards her emotional needs. The Nurse begins to have her own beliefs concerning Juliet: she believes Juliet should wed Paris and forget Romeo because he is banished. Friar Lawrence begins what will ultimately be the tragic end to Romeo and Juliet: he agrees to marry the lovers for he believes that it will end the feud. Each of these adults, some greater than others, are partly responsible for the disastrous deaths of Romeo and Juliet.
             Juliet disobeys her father's orders to marry Paris; Lord Capulet reacts with great rage and anger. He belittles Juliet to a great extent, and tells her to be grateful for what she has. Lord Capulet remarks, "Hang thee young baggage, disobedient wretch! I tell thee what, get thee to church a Thursday, Or never after look me in the face" (III. v. 160-163). Lord Capulet reveals an appalling nature while yelling at Juliet; he threatens to disown her, and she is running out of people to turn to. In addition, he makes certain Juliet is aware of the consequences of not following his wishes: "And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets, For by my soul, I'll ne'er acknowledge thee, Nor what is mine shall ever do thee good" (III. v. 193-195). Lord Capulet's actions drive Juliet into a state of confusion; she is scared, and does not know what to do.
             From Juliet's perspective, the Nurse is looked upon as a sole source of confidence; however, the Nurse seems to be changing her views. The Nurse believes Juliet should marry Paris because Romeo will not come back to challenge her marriage: "Then since the case so stands as now it doth, I think it best you married with the County" (III. v. 217-218).
