Comparing and Contrasting the War through Different Sources
             George Herrings explanation of the war in source one gives the reader an idea that the war was completely chaotic and unorganized. He makes it clear that their was no objective to fighting the war. Also, he mentions that when things started to go wrong with American intervention, they did not change their strategies or procedures because they didn't really have any to begin with. Herring focuses on the mistakes made by the president and his lack of intelligence on war techniques. Herring explains how the absence of leadership leads to a lot of businesses and agencies proceeding with how they felt was necessary. Leading a lot of businesses and organizations all working separately with different outcomes and solutions on their minds. In source one, it is made very clear, that LBJ ran his war as if it were another minor incident that he was taking care of. The President just wanted to be in charge of everything and that was his way to do it. Herring explains that limited war wasn't a very intelligent approach. In source two, Loren Baritz focuses more on the limited knowledge that the Americans knew about the Vietnamese people. The war in her opinion seems to be based on the Americans being frustrated and upset with the Vietnamese people just because they didn't have the same culture. Their cultures differed immensely and the Americans just could stand that. Baritz explains how the American's thought the Vietnamese were stupid not to allow them to help out. The war was going to give the Americans the opportunity to show what they were trained to accomplish. Baritz explains the uncertainty of the Americans with their own technology. Their advancements weren't going to help them win the war, but their knowledge of the enemy would.
