I chose to do my research paper on children with autism. Autism is a type of pervasive disorder. It interferes with a person's ability to communicate with and relate to others. It is a life long condition and it affects three important areas of development: verbal communication, social interaction, and imaginative play. Usually the child begins to show signs of autism as early as age 3 but it can come at any time. One of the articles I have "communication in autism" addresses the question, What causes autism? And the answer is that there really is no single cause. People with autism have often been diagnosed with unbalanced brain structures. Other studies show that it can be inherited, passed from generation to generation. Environmental factors also play an important role in the development. Autism is probably one of the most common developmental disabilities. It affects people from all races and ages. There is an estimate of about 400,000 individuals in the US that are diagnosed with autism. It affects boys 3 to 4 times more than it does girls. About 75% are of low intelligence and about 10% percent does extremely well academically in specific areas such as math. People who have autism have a hard time when it comes to having a relationship. Children with autism often make little eye contact with others and are often seen playing by themselves. They may also show other signs such as repetitive behaviors, spinning in circles, self injuries, and temper tantrums. Babies who are born with autism from the beginning are not able to recognize human faces and voices, not even their own mother's. However, if those signs are detected at an early time, the child can be submitted to intensive training of about 25 hours per week where he or she will learn to recognize faces and other things as well.
