The meaning and relevance of dreams is a highly debated issue in modern psychology. Some psychologist believe dreaming is nothing more that the random firing of cells in the brain producing non-relevant, meaningless images during sleep. Others believe that dreams are a window into the unconscious mind and can be used to solve problems in our lives. Extensive research is being conducted to support both theories. Dr. Paul Horowitz, a astrophysicist at Harvard University, is currently doing research to help support the theory that dreams can be used to produce creative solutions to everyday problems. Dr. Horowitz believes that one can use their dreams to solve problems that plague everyday life. In his research he is trying to prove that our dreams cast solutions in to symbolic terms. He has found that by hypnotically preparing the mind to receive the answer to a problem through the dream, writing out the dream as soon as one wakes, or discussing the dream with a friend or therapist, can help us find the hidden potential of our dreams to solve problems. To support his theory, he had subjects play the video game Alpine Racer II. As soon as his novice participants fell asleep, they began to feel the sensations and images of playing the game. his expert subjects dreamt about real places instead, proving that they did not need to work out the same issues of playing the game as did the novice players. In turn, he has shown that dreams work to help the mind solve problems in everyday life.
             I believe that dreams can help a person to solve everyday problems. Dr. Horowitz's research has strengthened my opinion on this matter by showing that one does dream about real life problems.
