Environmenatl Management of CCG Operations

pport to all marine navigational aids, which include floating and fixed marine aids. Some of these aids are in the form of isolated lightstation sites that exist on remote locations. Others are seasonal and year round floating buoys and markers. In order to perform this maintenance the aids have to be retrieved and returned to CCG facilities to be refurbished.
Being a branch of DFO the CCG has to adhere to the DFO Environmental Policy. This policy contains 18 management principles and guidelines that are considered necessary for environmental protection. Two of these principles state that continuous improvements are to made to CCG operations and facilities, and any hazardous waste present on CCG sites or produced by CCG operations be disposed of in a responsible manner.
It was only a matter of time before the CCG modernized its operations and sites, thereby eliminating the need for generators, fuels tanks, and even keepers on some sites. In 1991 the CCG began a solar initiative that seen a handful of non-road accessible sites converted from combustion powered to solar powered, the success of these sites lead to the solarization of all non-road accessible lightstations. The CCG has implemented a solvent recycling system in the buoy maintenance facility. This system allows solvent that would normally be disposed of through a hazardous waste facility to be recovered. The CCG also discontinued the use of large lead acid batteries in their lighted buoys and began using solar array¡s on each buoy to produce the energy needed to power the lighted aid. Another
Not only would these initiatives and others like it significantly reduce spending and fuel consumption, but it would also reduce the amount of greenhouse gases and other hazardous waste being produced by CCG operations. This report will deal with the environmental management of CCG light stations, floating buoys, and the implementation of a solvent recycling system at the buoy m...
