Everyone is looking for that special feeling/moment in their life where there is a feeling of fulfillment and everything seems to be good. Mrs. Mallard, in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, comes across that sensation unexpectedly, without ever really searching for it. For Mrs. Mallard, the feeling of freedom brings indescribable joy and ecstasy. It is her true love. The description of the setting in this story and the depiction of Mrs. Mallard's physical occurrences after she heard about the death of her husband both identify her love for freedom. Also, the fact that she, "...died of heart disease-of joy that kills." represents she finally got what she wanted.
             When Mrs. Mallard is in her bedroom after she heard the fatal news of her husband in a railroad disaster, the author illustrates a fresh, spring-like setting of the outside world. As she was sitting in her chair looking out the window, it said she could see the tops of trees that were quivering with new spring life and that countless sparrows were twittering around the roof. There were also many instances in which a blue sky was mentioned. These portrayals all suggest a fresh beginning and a new, freedom-filled life. At this point, Mrs. Mallard feels something coming on to her but she doesn't know exactly what.
             As this feeling gets closer and closer, she abandons herself. All of a sudden, the words "Free, free, free!" slip from her lips. This immense sense of freedom takes over her entire body. Her eyes brightened, her pulse began beating rapidly, and the blood flowing through her veins "warmed and relaxed every inch of her body." At this point, Mrs. Mallard knows that she is now truly free. Free from her husband that supposedly dies. The emotion she contains is so great from this feeling that it dominates her whole body.
