The boy attends the Christian Brothers' School, and much of his life and the lives of others in his area is devoted to religion. The last book is called The Memoirs of Vidocq, which is an autobiography written by Vidocq, the self-titled "master of crime", and one of the world's first private investigator/detectives. This work shows the boy's curious side, and his desire to explore all things new and foreign, whether that be first love, or the traveling bazaar. The physical call to action in this story occurs when the boy has his first actual conversation with Mangan's sister. As soon as she mentions the bazaar called Araby, it becomes this magical place in the boy's mind, as wonderful as the girl, herself, for he associates her with all things beautiful and good. The boy tells the girl that if he goes to Araby, he will return with something for her, and thus begins his quest.
