There're a lot movies and stories in where authors trying to show that no one can escape our destiny. In the play "Oedipus the King" Sophocles writes how main character Oedipus who got cursed by the Greek Gods since he was born and who's blinded by the truth for many years. I've gather lots of opinion in my discussion group and most of them were that Oedipus is mean, bad and selfish guy. However, I personally disagree with those statements and think rather opposite.
There might be lots of negative and positive view points about Oedipus because the play doesn't give us clear statement that could show that Oedipus was neither bad nor good. The way I looked at this play is that Oedipus was innocent man who had to go through so many sufferings and who had no idea that he been cursed and that his destiny was already written by gods that he'd kill his father and would get married with his mother. After his parents got rid of him and he end up living with people whom he thought were his real parents. Furthermore, after he heard how drunk man said that he wasn't his father's son, he then must of feel hurt by it and as it shows in the play he left from home to try to overcome his destiny.
"Some man at a banquet who had drunk to much
shouted out – he was far gone, mind you –
that I am not my father's son. Fighting words!
I barely restrained myself that day..."
That clearly shows that he got badly hurt by those words and he was fighting those words in his mind as he mentioned he barely restrained himself that day. That I think shows that he's person with heart and feelings who does care about people who raised him. Moreover, the reason that he would leave is that he could get ashamed and confused, thus he took of trying to find who he really was. My personal reaction would be the same if I would of hear such words
