Illegal Immigrants: Catching a College Break?

             "With a 3.2 grade-point average, a letter of admission to the University of Utah, and $4000 in scholarships, she seemed to have everything she needed to succeed. Except, it turned out, a Social Security number" (Marklein 1).
             Many families in the United States struggle to send their children to college. With tuition rising, middle class families are hoping they will receive some form of aid from the Government. How is it that these Illegal Immigrants can illegally cross our borders and receive subsidized college tuition while hard working American Citizens pay a full tuition? A law should be enforced to discontinue allowing these immigrants to attend our colleges at a subsidized price.
             "It is outrageous that in these tough economic times, when tuition is being raised on students and families, that those who are breaking our laws are receiving taxpayer funds and potentially taking a spot away from a student" (Kilgore 3). Although Kilgore made a convincing statement, Gerry Maak disagrees and spends her time helping immigrants. Maak stated, "They all now see opportunities that they didn't have before" (3). Although these opportunities exist, critics argue that this only encourages immigrants to enter our country illegally. "It really is a slap in the face to millions of legal
             immigrants who abided by the rules and waited many years (for) their turn" (Camarota 3) It is also a 'slap in the face' for the Americans as well. For several years we wait patiently for college to come. We have all dreamt of where we want to go. For most of us, we end up at a community or state college because our parents cannot afford to pay a higher tuition at a University.
