What is life? Is it simply the span of time between birth and death, or perhaps is it the difference between a leaf and a rock. What is the value of the life of a human being? Can it have a value placed upon it? Life is all of these things, but to anyone who lives has experience. Experience is the life of the human; it is what set us apart from a leaf, fly, rock, or even dog. The ability to reason and choose is what makes life so glorious. An unhappy lifetime in prison is worse than death. Experiences such as having a family or friends, a successful career, or merely choosing your own path are what bring happiness in a life of true meaning.
Whether it is a traditional family or friends that are as close as family other people are an essential source of happiness in life. There is a man that has traveled the world by himself. He has many pictures and memories and no one to share them with. He has said many times that it was fun but, he wishes that he could share them with someone. This is an example of temporary happiness. Jeanette Doil, a family member of a prison inmate says this, "The family of an inmate, though guilty of nothing, suffers right along side the inmate as though they were." (6) If the prisoner were dead the family would have a hard time to deal with, but just like everyone else in the world that has had someone close to them die, they will cope and adapt and move on with their lives. What possible experiences could a prison inmate have that would prove to edify or further there life. This is the reason that death would be a lesser punishment than life in prison.
Productivity is key to a happy and full life. The usual method of achieving productivity is through a successful career. Career is a loose term.
