e was lucky enough to snag "An executive job in 1905 with the Rock Island Line Railroad in Des Moines, Iowa.(Earhart 1)" Edwin took his wife Amy and moved to Des Moines. They left Amelia and Muriel with their grandparents since they were better off there. Finally in 1908 Amelia and Muriel moved to Des Moines to live with their parents. (Earhart 1)
             When Amelia was 10 years old she saw her first airplane. It was at the Iowa state far, "It was a thing of rusty wire and wood and not at all interesting... (Earhart 1)" "She was much more interested in a peach basket paper hat purchased at the fair. (Earhart 1)" It took Amelia almost a decade before she grew an interest for aviation. (Earhart 1)
             Edwin was promoted in 1909. At first everything was better than it was before and Muriel said, "This happy time," Muriel later said, "was unfortunately a prelude to a period which saw the loss of out material prosperity and the beginning of the disintegration of the family..." Edwin developed a drinking problem. Amelia, as well as her neighbors and friends, thought he was a drunk as well. (Earhart 1)
             Amelia's mother took Muriel and her and left Edwin in 1914 after he was fired from his job. They went to live with some of her friends that she had in Chicago. As Muriel said above they basically went from high class people to being the people that were on the bottom of society. Amy who received some money from a trust fund was able to give the girls enough to live and eventually sent them to private schools so they could prepare for college.
             At first Amelia was to be a nurse. She decided this after she visited her sister in Canada. She wanted to serve "As a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse at a military hospital until the Armistice in November 1918.
