A day with obese children

            Today began with an informational session between my supervisor and me. He described why these children were accepted into this specific program and the goals that the Riekes Center and staff sets for these children. This group of young children ranging in age from six to twelve are all unfortunately dealing with being overweight or obese, and naturally along with this problem comes low self-esteem and ridicule from their peers. The goal of the Riekes Center is to target weight-loss and instill a foundation of healthy nutrition and fitness to turn the lives of these children in a healthier direction.
             After watching a short video on the Riekes Center, the children arrived and were taken to the indoor track by the strength coaches to begin their warm-up. The strength coaches let me know that today I would be doing the class with the kids to fully understand why they are doing these specific drills and to be able to know how to correctly do them in order to coach them in the following sessions. I stayed with these children for the next hour and a half through a low-cardio workout where they focused on the correct physical movements of jogging, running, skipping and galloping. We then all moved on a series of circuit training where we learned the correct way to do certain weightlifting exercises while exhibiting correct posture. The focus here was not obviously to use a heavy load of weight, but to make sure that the kids understood how to do the exercises correctly and why each one was important and beneficial. After finishing our circuit training, we went and spoke with one of the nutritionists so the children could reflect on what they ate that day and how they could make smarter, healthier choices.
