While reading this book, I was intrigued in many different ways and had many different feelings towards certain things that were said and done. I have great admiration for Barbara Ehrenreich to have done this experiment/activity. It really portrays those people who are struggling in low-income America and how they do manage to get by, but just barely. A lot of what I was reading reminded me of different family members who have struggled many years ago, but have been fortunate enough to come out on top and it would also remind me of my friends and I now on a day-to-day basis. One aspect of the book was also to let women know and understand what is going on out in America, a behind the scenes look. I know I was shocked and somewhat disturbed at what really is happening out there.
             I knew going into the book that waiting jobs and housecleaning jobs were not very well paid, but not as bad as what Ehrenreich came upon. I have about five different friends who all work at a restaurant in La Jolla and for the most part they are servers. They get paid the lowest they can get paid, six dollars and seventy-five cents. However, because it is a busy restaurant, they can come out every night with at least fifty to sixty dollars of tips. The catch to this is, however, you have to know someone within the restaurant or have great experience to even be considered as an applicant for the job. I soon realized, after reading Ehrenreich's book, that so called "real" waiting jobs do not get paid very much at all. It was disturbing that she could not afford a nice place to live on just the waiting job that she had in Florida, yet my friends here in San Diego live on their own with their jobs. I can relate to this story, but only in some ways. Yes, I have a job and yes I have bills to pay, however I get paid much more and I do not have to pay to live somewhere since I live at home.
