A persons acts are directly related to how they feel a world should operate. We attain these values or morals as we grow older, more mature, and experience life's many different paths. In, Cry, The Beloved Country many people speak their minds to reveal their beliefs, some however, show their beliefs by their actions. These actions are what power us, give us reason to go on and live to see another day. Stephen Kumalo is a strong force in Cry, The Beloved Country because of his family, social, and religious beliefs.
             It is not with out strong family values, and love for their family that a person can live a proud and happy life. In part one of Cry, The Beloved Country we find Stephen Kumalo, an unfundisi or reverend to the village of Ndotsheni, has received a letter containing information regarding his sister. The letter states that his sister is "very sick" and asks that Stephen come to Johannesburg, a large South African city quickly. With little hesitation Stephen decides he must go to Johannesburg to find and help save his sister Gertrude. While on his journey Stephen meets with his brother John, who he has not seen or wrote to in many years. "Good morning, my own brother, son of our own mother" says Stephen smiling as he sees his brother for the first time in many years. The two men rejoice and start to catch up with each other. Later in part 2 of the book, Stephens's son is sentenced to death for the murder of Arthur Jarvis; concerned for the welling being of his son's wife and child Stephen says to Absalom at their last meeting, "I shall care for your wife and child". With a strong belief in what you are doing, and love for your family you can take the good with the bad, and continue to love those who still love you.
