Character and Conflict

             In the classic book Great Expectations by Charles Dickson, one character that encounters a lot of conflict is man named Abel Magwitch. Since Magwitch was born he knew nothing but crime and poverty, and he always relied on his stealing aptitude to survive. While traveling this dead end road, Magwitch got acquainted with a very devious man named Compeyson. Compeyson was an imposter of a gentleman for he was able to speak and dress like one but was truly a low class man like Magwitch. Both of the men participated in criminal behavior together, and were convicted for their misconduct in the court of law. When it came down to the trial, Compeyson sleazed his way out using his gentlemen disguise and received a lesser punishment then Magwitch. Magwitch knew Compeyson was nothing but a low life, and despised him greatly.
             In the beginning of the book Pip met Magwitch in the marshes. When Pip went to go bring the food to Magwitch he ran into the wrong convict, Compeyson. Pip finally found Magwitch and told him that he ran into another convict. Magwitch knew right then that it was Compeyson. He hated Compeyson and so he hunted him down in the marshes. Instead of both of them getting away and being free, he went after Compeyson so he wouldn't be free. Magwitch and Compeyson got into a fight in the marshes and the police captured them both. Magwitch was then sent to Australia to start a life there and he was not able to return to London ever again.
             Magwitch and Compeyson don't return for a while in the book since their brawl in the marshes. Magwitch has decided to send the money he is making by farming to Jaggers so Pip can become a gentleman. He goes back to London to go see Pip and tell him that he is his benefactor. By doing this Magwitch is risking his own life and if he is caught he will be hung. Compeyson has been following Pip around and spying on him.
