Marijuana

             Marijuana is one of the most widely used illegal drugs in the country today. The amount of people that smoke pot is on the rise and not showing any signs of slowing down. The government is spending billions of dollars trying to stop society from smoking marijuana yet is having no effect on the amount of people that are using marijuana. Petty drug offenses are utilizing too much of our court time and jail space when we are not capturing the actual people who bring pot into the country. The smear ads that are run on the television may appeal to the average adult who knows nothing of pot, except that they want their children to stay away from it, but do not change the opinion of the people that are actually smoking marijuana.
             I am not saying that marijuana is a healthy habit or that everyone should smoke marijuana. I do believe that people should have the right to choose whether or not to smoke pot. Most people that smoke pot will cause no bodily harm to anyone other than themselves. I don't believe that marijuana should be put in the same category as such harsher drugs like cocaine, lsd, and heroin, but should be put in with the other two legal alternatives, tobacco and alcohol. Society has a free will to use alcohol or tobacco if they so choose to do so and it is socially accepted throughout the country. The amount of deaths that these two legal drugs cause is enormous and heavily outweigh the amount of deaths that marijuana cause.
             If legalized there would be a better education on the drug which would give people the information that they need to make a wise decision of whether or not to use marijuana. When I was going through school I learned extensively starting at a young age about the dangers of tobacco and alcohol, yet marijuana was just thrown in with the other illegal drugs and left me not knowing too much about it.
