Gender Roles and Issues

             I believe that gender issues are still a big issue in today's society. All schools are run differently, and have different ways to address gender issues. Gender is a category consisting of behaviors that result from the social, cultural, and psychological factors associated with masculinity and femininity within a society. There are appropriate male and female roles that result from the socialization of the individual within a group. A nation as culturally diverse as the United States consists of a common overarching culture as well as a series of micro-cultures. These microcultures share most of the core values of the nation-state, but these values are often mediated by the various microcultures that are interpreted differently within them. There is a strong belief in the individuality and individualism that exists within the national macroculture. Ethnic communities often much less endorse it. African Americans and Latinos who have not experienced high levels of cultural assimilation into the mainstream culture are much more group oriented. United States Schools are highly individualistic in their learning and teaching styles, evaluation procedures, and norms. Many students, particularly African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans, are group oriented. These students experience problems in the learning environment. Teachers can enhance the learning opportunities for these students.
             Theories and research indicate that female students may have preferred ways of knowing, thinking, and learning that differ to some extent from those preferred by males. An example of gender issues is in Standardized Tests. At all levels it is known that females get better grades than males in school. But when it comes to the Standardized Tests, males outscore females on both verbal and mathematics. Because females do so poorly on these tests, their future is in jeopardy.
