My Opinion

             Have you ever tried to listen to a brand new CD that you have just bought at a Wal-mart or some other big department store and heard the music interrupted by an annoying backwards, sped-up kind of noise right where a swear word should have been? That is censorship. My topic for this paper is censorship and why it is bad. Censorship is wrong because it keeps the world from hearing what the artists who make all that music want you to hear.
             Censorship robs musicians of their freedom of speech. It removes all of the artistic expression from their works and leaves them sounding as if the man has stomped all over them. I believe that people should have the right to express themselves in whatever way that they see fit. If some people are offended by what someone else has to say, so what. If its so horrible, don't listen to it.
             I used to think that censorship really wasn't that big of a deal. That is, until I researched this topic for a report that I did back in highschool and came across some interesting stories about kids that were kicked out of school just for wearing a t-shirt that had the logo of a band that someone took offense to. The shirts themselves had nothing obscene anywhere on them. Someone just didn't happen to like the band and thought that the kid needed to be punished for liking it. I saw several articles that more or less had that same basic idea and contained references to several bands that I happen to listen to a lot. That made me take a second look at censorship and how dumb it is. Actually, it doesn't just hurt the artists, it also hurts their supporters, the kids that buy all the shirts that are emblazoned with the logo of their favorite band.
             One of the bands that I saw mentioned a lot in the articles that I researched back then was Korn. Korn is a band that formed about ten years ago in Bakersfield, California. Pretty much since their entrance into the music scene, people
