Before 1914, my home had been controlled by European nations; nations that are hundreds, even thousands of miles away. Now you ask how is that possible? Well, it is very simple. The Europeans came to my land saying that they would increase our economy, that we would have education and become civilized. And I am so sad to say that we fell for it. The real intentions of the Europeans were to take over everything but make it seem like we would prosper through all of it. But we suffered. Our freedom, rights and lives were taken away from us while we watched. The European nations took control of our government, used our land for their greed and enslaved us on our own land. How could we have been so oblivious to what was happening to our home? Were we going to sit around and do nothing about it? There was only one thing that would change that.
             In August of 1914, a force so large, larger than anyone could have even imagined occurred. World War 1 became a reality check to people all around the world. Millions of people died for their countries. But what this article is really about is the effect of WWI on the relationship between European nations and my home Africa. The European nations recruited many Africans to go fight for them in their war. Many Africans agreed to fight in return they would get their independence. The European nations thought that we did not have enough knowledge to understand reality, but they were wrong. Schools were teaching is new ideas and making us aware of things. Hearing about the war, and hearing about why the war was happening was brought to our attention. One word lingered in our minds constantly. That one word would bring many Africans to join together to fight for what we believed in. A simple word, "INDEPENDENC". People were yearning for the sweet taste of freedom.
