             Human destiny is to be achieved, however, the intervention of fury turns one's fate to tragedy. Manipulation and the desire for inflicting pain and suffering to others, are key elements that prove the fact that controlling other's destinies lead to self destruction, both emotionally and physically. In the stories Medea, by Euripides, and Hedda Gabler, by Henrik Ibsen, both scorned women encounter mental and social struggles. These struggles and their desire to control human destiny consequently lead to tragedy and calamity.
             First, Medea and Hedda Gabler both use their power of manipulation to steer their prey to destruction. Although Jason has a new wife, Creusa, Medea does everything she can to attain vengeance. Her extreme love for Jason ultimately causes Medea to murder Creusa, Creon, and her own sons. She skillfully manipulates the death of Creusa, by sending her deadly gold, which kills her and her father, Creon. "Our enemies were great and powerful, they were full of cold pride, they ruled all this country -they are down in the ashes," states Medea when she learns of Creusa and Creon's deaths. After successfully killing them, and her sons, Jason must live with the pain and suffering Medea has initiated. Medea ultimately changes man's destiny my destroying Creusa, Creon, his children, and Jason's pride and power.
             Hedda Gabler is very manipulative as well. Although she is not as complex of a character as Medea, Hedda nevertheless strives to control human destiny. She lives vicariously through George and Julia Tesman, and acting indifferently towards them. Ahead of her time, Hedda lives a blasé lifestyle, unhappy and unsatisfied with her life. She manipulates her husband by attempting to dominate the way he thinks, acts, and responds toward others . Afraid of public scandal, Hedda didn't marry Lovborg because of his low life status.
