STEM CELL RESEARCH

             Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's, and Alzheimer's are some of the most atrocious diseases that we know of. "A December poll commissioned by organizers showed that eighty- five percent of probable voters have a relative or close friend with one of these five illnesses." (Roosevelt 50) Scientists believe that embryonic stem cell research could lead to a cure for these debilitating diseases. Should Americans opposing embryonic stem cell research be able to stop what could eventually lead to a cure for these diseases?
             I strongly believe that stem cell research should be conducted. Although many diseases may not be able to be cured in my life time, if they will be able to cure them in my child's life or even my grandchild's, stem cell research will be worth it to me.
             "The word embryonic refers to an embryo, an immature organism in the first days of development." (Viegas 21) Embryonic stem cells are "The building blocks of life." (Roosevelt 49) When a child is conceived, it has many stages of development. The first takes place right after conception; this is when the embryo is known as a blastocyst. A blastocyst is a mass of cells resembling little bubbles. Inside the blastocyst is where the stem cells are located. Once the blastocyst reaches four days old the stem cells are able to divide into any type of cell. Because we are able to turn these into any type of cell we want, if we could implant them into another human replacing the damaged ones and make them grow, we could potentially cure diseases.
             When a man and a woman are unable to conceive a child naturally, they usually turn to a fertility clinic for help. Fertility clinics use a process called in-vitro, meaning in a test tube. In-vitro techniques create multiple embryos, using only one or two in the process.
