Twelth night them of love

             How could a production of Twelfth Night present the theme of love? Choose two or three scenes to show how you could present different interpretations of this theme.
             In the play Twelfth Night, there are many examples of the different types of love that exist. The play depicts how love can be used to disguise, trick and ultimately humiliate; as well as the enjoyment, happiness and fulfilment it can bring.
             Immediately in Act 1 scene 1, the play focuses on the theme of love. Orsino is love sick for Olivia, and is upset that he is not with his her. He speaks recurrently to Curio about the extent of his love and how he wants to be with her; relating everything said by Curio to Olivia as he cannot think of anything else. Trevor Nunn's version creates this scene with dim lighting and slow background music to comply with the sadness that is being felt. Kenneth Brannagh's adaptation is slightly different; Orsino is sat outside with snow falling to present a Christmas scene in which the play is set, slow music is playing which is used to compliment Orsino's feelings of love. Both these versions focus more on expression and the settings rather than what Orsino has to say; this may be because the words aren't extremely romantic. His interpretation of love is likened to a disease you can't rid of as "the appetite may sicken and die" which isn't the most pleasant notion of love.
             In many ways Orsino can be seen as a romantic when he declares his love for Olivia, yet he come across very arrogant and self-obsessed; he chooses to send Cesario to woo Olivia for him while he sits back. When he learns that Olivia is in mourning for 7 years he becomes more confident that her love can be greater for him. This is again quite arrogant of him, but this can also be interpreted as romantic that he believes nothing can come between there love and he will stop at nothing to have her.
