Teen Suicide, An Epidemic

             Every year thousands of youth die by their own hands. They make the choice that they want to die, and they take their own life. According to Richard O'Connor Teen Suicide: Statistics show that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among those 15 to 25 years of age, and the 6th leading cause of death among those 5 to 14 years of age. According to Bruce Bongar, "It is estimated that 500,000 teenagers try to kill themselves every year, and about 5000 succeed. Teenage suicide occurs at an alarming rate, and can be directly linked to three main causes: depression, substance abuse, and relationships"(18). Sadly, many times the person contemplating the act of suicide shows classic symptoms of asking for help, but loved ones such as family and friends fail to notice the signs. The person doesn't even realize the impact that this will have on family members or school friends. The suicide victim is so depressed that they finally decide to just give up on life. They honestly think that killing themselves would be better than trying to live through the pain. Sadly enough, they don't care about the family member or school friends. They're so focused on their pain; they can't seem to think of anything else.
             There are three main groups at risk for committing suicide: Males, teens, and homosexuals. Although females attempt suicide more often than males, males are more successful because they use dangerous tools such as firearms or hang themselves (Bongar 17). Female's use less lethal ways such as sleeping pills. Teens are at risk every day because life becomes very difficult, and competition for good grades or rejection from a relationship places strong demands on them. Strong demands that causes depression. Lack of parental interest may make them feel alone. They feel that their parents don't understand them when they try to express their feeling or they feel that their parents either denied or igno...
