A mysterious group of young men at your high school who do nothing but separate themselves from normal society, would you refer to them as outsiders people that don't belong or would you say they are just different and there is more behind just what they do. Breaking Rank is written by Kristen Randle who talks through Casey and Baby's point of view. People can change. This is true because in the book when baby took that standardized test and the clan pressured baby to go against his values, then baby and Casey were able to overcome there controversy with each other.
             Baby the main character decided to go against the clan wishes and took a standardized test and scored extremely high on it. This proved to Baby that he had the abilities to go and do anything in school besides obeying the clan rules that they had for him. Therefore Baby was able to change his ways and not have to abide by the clans rules.
             The Clan wanted Baby to break his convictions and sleep with Casey even though Baby doesn't want to do it. This girl named Casey is tutoring Baby for school and they she gets mixed up with a "outsider loner kid". This quote is from Baby to Casey talking about the clan "The Clan isn't a gang, We're not territorial. We don't steal. We don't vandalize. We don't carry weapons. We are a culture. A society within and in spite of a larger society" (p. 96). This quote talks about how the clan isn't just a gang its basically beliefs.
             The controversy between Baby and Casey was when the clan realized what was going on and that Baby was breaking the Clans "laws". They were jealous of what he had done and then Baby was desiring power over some of the clan leaders. Then the clan makes a big deal out of Baby's and Casey's relationship. This brings much turmoil.
