of stave 1 is primarily about introducing the character of Scrooge, his life, workplace and general attitudes towards life. In this stave we are introduced to the ghost of Marley. Marley had been scrooges' co-worker in his counting house business. We soon learn that scrooge is not a well-liked man and that he is not generous at all. We know this because when the charity man comes to collect for money, scrooge says:
From this we can tell that scrooge is not prepared to give money as he feels that he pays too much money in taxes, to look after people in prisons and workhouses, so why should he pay more for the poor. Scrooge's appearance was of an old man as Dickens uses the lines:
"Nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait"
From this we can see that Scrooge is not a very attractive man and not many people will like him to prove this again Dickens uses the phrase:
