Aphra behn

             Through the history, certain individuals had had the courage to stand up to the ideologies of the time and set the stage for future changes. They were visionaries viewed by their times as rebels with no cause. One of those unique individuals was a woman named Aphra Behn. Due to the slow changes towards women's wrights, she was discovered and accepted by a more modern audience. Her work in literature is really good, not necessarily the best by today's standards. She is however the creator of a new stile of writing. By today's standards her language is tamed, but by the standards of her time, she was scandalous and out of place in a man's world. She stood up and demanded to be heard and accepted; she never looked back and always stood her ground. She is certainly not to be forgotten.
             What does the Restoration period and Charles II have in common? Only the most controverssional woman of the time – Aphra Behn. Also known as Afra, Aphara, or Ayfara, she was baptized at Waye, Kent, in 1640. Her father John Johnson, was a barber. Because the Restoration period wasn't very good at keeping records, even her father's status was unsure and most of her childhood is unknown. Some of her works are clue to who she is. While still a child, she was taken to Surinam, then an English possession, from which she returned to England in 1658. In Surinam, Aphra learned the history and acquired personal knowledge of the African prince Oroonoko. She related the adventures in her novel, Oroonoko. On her return from
             Surinam she married Mr. Behn, a London merchant of Dutch extraction (Aphra #1, p.1). Her wit and abilities brought her into high estimation at court, and her husband having died by this time – Charles the second employed her in a secret in the Netherlands during the Dutch war.
