The notion of courage plays an integral role in both the classic epics and in the modern Irish narrative Angela's Ashes.
The heroes in the classic epics show courage through overwhelming obstacles. Achilles and Odysseus display courage through their misfortunes. First, Achilles shows courage during the Trojan War. Achilles knew from the beginning that he was going to die, but he still went and fought. Fighting in the war was very courageous. All throughout the battle Achilles was very strong physically. Many times he escaped death. No matter how many times he escaped death he always continued courageously. Towards the end of the war after Achilles had killed Hektor, he showed a lot of courage because "[he] knew that his own death was near" (201). Next, Odysseus shows courage throughout his long journey. Odysseus started off not knowing the outcome of his journey, but he continued on courageously. Even though he missed his wife and son he stayed strong both physically and mentally. He was very brave and courageous through "trying to save his own life and [also] trying to bring his men safely home" (Samuel Butler 1). All through out the journey many evil people and creatures wanted to bring him harm. He used his wit to outsmart all the evil. Odysseus never stopped until "he came home and all the suitors were dead" (228). His continued perseverance was very courageous, and led him to be the hero.
The main character, Francis McCourt, in the book Angela's Ashes, displays courage numerous times. Francis shows courage through all the hard times in his life. First Francis shows courage through out poverty. The beginning of Francis McCourt's life was though due to the effects of alcoholism.
