An American Childhood

             In the story An American Childhood, by Annie Dillard, it is emphasize the value of pursuing an important goal. The author recalls childhood to be the "only firsthand experience". Dillard's simplicity in writing her autobiographical work shows the reader the importance of every situation in her childhood. The author uses nature as a setting which gives the readers a sense of a true and honest world. Dillard uses techniques like exaggeration, imagery and repetition to create suspense in her story, An American Childhood. (great!)
             Annie Dillard has a very light attitude towards her story. Her tone gives the reader a happy and well known? attitude towards the story. This story has a children's light way of seeing the problems and this mood is felt by the reader. Dillard wants to make the reader see how children give all their heart towards chasing a goal.
             Dillard uses a simple way of writing her story. She chose common and everyday used words and narrates the incidents in her story in a chronological way, which gives the reader a better understanding of the story. An American Childhood is about a common winter day she was out with her friends and they were throwing snwballs to (at) cars, suddenly a man from one of this (these) cars started to chase her and a friend, he wasn't able to catch them, but if he did so, what could he have done to them. In this story it shows how sometimes adults forget about their childhood years and about the games they played.
             Nature as a setting gives the reader a sense of freedom, which also relates with children playing outside. Winter may be seen as a cold and sad season, but in this story, snow is the most important aspect of the game.
