In the beginning of Chapter X, I realized something serious was about to happen in the reading. Anytime that Linda would write, "Reader," I knew that she was trying to make sure that the reader was paying total attention to the narrative, because what she was expressing was extremely important. She started a few passages off with "reader", in Chapter X. One particular of importance was when she was beginning to explain what she had decided to do, so she would not have to move into the cottage that Dr. Flint was preparing for her. She states, "neither can I plead ignorance or thoughtlessness", when referring to her decision to become pregnant by Mr. Sands, in hopes that Dr. Flint would sell her. She knew what she was doing when she chose to have sex with Mr. Sands, she wanted to have a choice in deciding who to have sex with, she did not want to have it forced upon her by Dr. Flint. For once in her slave life, she had a little of control, but not for long.
"It seems less degrading to give one's self, than to submit to compulsion," Linda wrote. She was willing to be impregnated by a single white man that she choose to have sex with then to be raped by her master and also impregnated if not the first time, it would be eventually inevitable. I believe she made the only decision that she could have, she knew that it would only be a matter of time before Dr. Flint had his way with her, and she was doing everything she could to keep that from happening and she was starting to run out of options.
She enjoyed the company she was keeping with Mr. Sands; she was having a good time. She was amazed what it felt like to enjoy spending time with another man, who was not her master and who did not have control over her.
