Are We Who We Portray

             In the story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", Flannery O'Connor explores the battle between good and evil through the characters of the Grandmother and The Misfit. While the exploration between good and evil is pretty evident, I believe O'Connor is also trying to determine if being people are actually the way they appear.
             The two main characters in the story are the Grandmother and The Misfit. As the theme suggests, O'Connor uses the Grandmother as a representative of good and The Misfit is a representative of evil. In order to know what O'Connor uses to determine good and evil, we must first examine these two characters.
             O'Connor portrays the Grandmother as a typical southern Christian woman. O'Connor goes into great detail describing the Grandmother's appearance as they depart for the family vacation. Not only does she describe what the Grandmother is wearing but also why she is dressed so elegantly. "the grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collar and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace, and at her neckline, she pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady." (par 12) From the on set, O'Connor is trying to portray the Grandmother as a lady and show a stark contrast in comparing how the wife is dressed. The wife is much younger and dresses in the same fashion as other women during this time period "had on slacks and still had her head tied up in a green kerchief". (par 12)
