One Flew over the cuckoos nest- Happy ending or not?

             After I finished reading, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, it left my thoughts hanging. Up until the last part I figured, Hey, everyone's going to get out and live happily ever after. But, then again, not everyone did live happily ever after.
             When Randle P. McMurphy first came to the ward, everyone was very intimidated by him. He was this big red headed guy, who looked like the type that you wouldn't want to mess with. He was a very built man with tattoos and scars all over him. He was very loud and obnoxious. He was originally sentenced to six months to a prison work farm, but when he was diagnosed as a psychopath for "too much fighting" he did not protest because he thought the hospital would be more comfortable than the work farm. He just wanted the attention, and oh boy did he get it. At their group therapeutic sessions, McMurphy would try and get everyone's attention and take the stage. He wanted to be, the bull goose looney of the ward and he was going to try everything he had to be the top dog.
             Not long after McMurphy came onto the ward, he had people backing him up on his thoughts. His first descendent was none other than Charles Cheswick. Cheswick would always back up McMurphy in the therapeutic sessions by always voting for his ideas first, breaking the ice for everyone else to do so.
             Cheswick, a man of much talk and little action, eventually drowns himself in the ward's swimming pool, not long after Cheswick takes a stand against Nurse Ratched and McMurphy does not support him. Cheswick's death is significant in that it awakens McMurphy to the extend of his influence and the mistake of his decision to conform. McMurphy gets some advice from the pool's lifeguard that all of the patients here are voluntary, and he is one of the few that is committed, as he himself is one of them.
