Let me begin by asking the question what is supreme happiness? Some say the supreme happiness in life is the conviction that we are loved. The teachings of the Buddha reveal a step by step path to lasting happiness. The mind is like a cloudy sky, in real meaning clear and pure but overcast by the clouds of delusions. These delusions in our mind such as hatred, ignorance, and greed are not an intrinsic part of the mind. If we apply the appropriate methods they can be completely eliminated, and we will experience the supreme happiness of life, meaning full enlightenment. The primary meaning of this term, supreme happiness in all the leading European languages seems to involve the notion of good fortune, good chance, and good happening. For happiness is necessarily amongst the most profoundly interesting subjects for all of us. The Greeks regarded it as a gift of the gods. Further reflection led to the view that it was given as a reward for goodness of life.
The section starts off by asking some questions regarding supreme happiness. Is there such a thing? Is there a way to keep yourself alive or isn't there? What to do, what to rely on, what to avoid, what to follow, what to leave alone, what to find happiness in, what to hate? These are all questions we find ourselves asking maybe even everyday. Even in this time Chuang Tzu knew what the world honored, wealth, reputation, long life, and a good name, not much has changed in this day in age. This is what majority of our society finds their happiness in, a life of beautiful sights, rich food, fine clothes, and ease. Why do we desire riches so a great deal? Does money really buy happiness? I think money does not buy happiness but just helps us in reaching our goals in life. Chuang Tzu writes that the world looks down on poverty, meanness, early death and a bad name. This is what the world finds bitter: a life that knows no rest, a mouth that gets no rich food...
