Krebs

            Hemingway described his style of writing as showing one eighth of the 'iceberg" and concealing the remaining seven eighths. In this metaphorical statement, Hemingway reveals that his style of writing was intended personally to unravel a story that "shows" only its outer appearances, while concealing a deeper, hidden meaning. Tangent to the previous idea, perhaps Hemingway meant that his simplistic approach (in his writing) could hold more sophistications than meets the eye. However, aside from all possibilities of the true nature of Hemingway's statement, I believe that one of his short stories, Soldier's Home, illustrates this concept of concealing the more intricate ideas of a seemingly simple plot. One can see that this story is, without any analysis, is plainly a short story about its own characters and their problems; a more thoughtful approach reveals some of it's more philosophical perspectives.
             Soldier's Home is of a young man (called Krebs) who returns late from the war (WWI) to come home shaken by the war, defeated by life and tired of the consequences of his actions.
             To further augment his problems, an unfeeling crowd of his former neighbors thought of him as a latecomer that did not deserve to receive an honorary welcome. Krebs eventually speaks with his mother of settling down to a normal life with a secure occupation, but decides not to disturb his parents and leaves for Kansas City.
             I believe Hemingway intended for this story to uncover truths of the effects of war on the minds of young people; how the experience of the continuous loss of friends and the sights and stench of death may convert the mindsets of young people into those of the elderly. A bleak approach to life and future would probably be the result of such an experience.
