Shakespeare may have used Gremio (a male) in this situation because it would have a greater impact on the audience and it would be more likely to gain its attention as it was a male's point of view and at that time a male's opinion was highly considered.
             Katherina's reply to Baptista is in an almost sarcastic tone:
             "I pray you sir, is it your will
             To make a stale of me amongst theses mates?"
             The reader can almost see the implicit stage directions. We can imagine Katherina with her hands on her hips looking if not embarrassed, hurt for being so mistreated by her father who is degrading her. The fact that Katherina responds to her father in that manner justifies the way they speak in her presence. It's as if she is on equal terms with the men.
