Courage, bravery, will, strength, love, hate . . . call it whatever you want. These traits are what a human spirit needs to achieve "victory" over evil. To obtain victory when someone has an assemblage with evil, they must know how to exhibit these qualities. Evil can be many things. Everyone has a kind of evil they want to defeat. An alcoholic in pursuit of victory over intemperance strives to acquire will and strength because they know that with this power, they will succeed. In the stories we read and the film we watched, the characters exemplified certain attributes that resulted in victory.
             He was trapped between life and a drastically agonizing death. Unfortunately, life was surpassingly limited. In Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum," the main character is put in a torture chamber and is tenacious to stay alive as long as possible. The character surmounts an escape victoriously in many ways. The character even goes as far as lathering himself in seasoning so rats will bite through the ropes bonding him to an altar which a sharpened pendulum is descending upon. He also prohibited his mind to be defeated. This refusal motivated him to find an exit out of each harrowing death, unfortunately only to be divulged to a new potential end. His safe-guarded victory was equitable to outside help, but either way, the character had a human spirit that refused to give up.
             So you're walking through the woods with a strange man you discover is the devil. What do you do? What Young Goodman Brown from Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" did ended victoriously. The devil unveiled an event to Young Goodman Brown that angered him; something that became burned into his mind for the rest of his life. Naturally, after witnessing something that upsets you, one may lust for revenge in hopes to maliciously injure the person or force that revealed such a horrible espial. Young Good...
