Book Review: Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

             Lord of the Rings: Return of the King
             "One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them" (Tolkien, quote page). J. R. R. Tolkien opens the final book in his fantasy trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, with the passage inscribed on the One Ring, meant perhaps to set the mood for the final third of his story. Tolkien is a master storyteller, with such classics under his belt as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and The Hobbit or There and Back Again.
             The Return of the King centers around several characters, each with their own story about the War of the Ring. Two hobbits, Frodo and Sam, are on a quest to destroy the Ring of Power before its master, Sauron, finds it. Their friends, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli travel through Dunharrow to the Paths of the Dead to rouse a Dead army to help in the battle of Pelennor Fields. The army is bound by an ancient oath to Aragorn, who holds it fulfilled after the army helps them capture Corsair ships.
             Frodo's kinsmen, Merry and Pippin, each find themselves in the service of a great nation: Merry swears fealty to Théoden-King of Rohan, and Pippin becomes a Guard of the City of Gondor. They each participate in the Battle of Pelennor Fields, though Merry is grievously wounded.
             Eowyn, Théoden-King's niece, sneaks off to war as a man named Dernhelm, and helps Merry do so, as well. Her uncle, Théoden, falls during the battle, and she protects his body from the Nazgûl, and dramatically reveals that she is a woman: "A sword rang as it was drawn. "Do what you will [to Théoden], but I will hinder it, if I may.'
             'Hinder me? Thou fool. No living man may hinder me!'
