Female Athlete Triad

Years ago, female sports were uncommon, and not consider much of a sport at all. The athletes played the game, but not nearly with as much speed, power and precision as they do now. Over the years, the number of female athletes has increased greatly along with the popularity of female sports. This caused female athletes to push harder play better and move faster, which means more time exercising and focusing on sports. Physicians began to notice a link between common medical problems in females and their exercise and sports routine. After several years of study we now can identify what the female athlete triad is, who is at risk for developing it, what the symptoms are and the most commonly used treatments for it.
The female athlete triad is a combination of three conditions, disordered eating, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. It is often caused by girls who do not balance the needs of their body with their training and sports schedule. Neglecting their body often leads to painful and debilitating diseases, which might not show up until it's to late.
Athletes suffering from disordered eating might often show symptoms of the commonly known eating disorders anorexia nervosa (anorexia) and bulimia nervosa (bulimia). This ranges from occasional restricted food intake to starving themselves to loose weight. However physicians believe that these athletes are not suffering from an eating disorder they are simply trying to loose weight to become a better athlete and to excel in their sport.
Amenorrhea is the condition when a females menstrual cycle becomes irregular or stops. Since the female athlete triad goes hand in hand with intense exercise, and weight reduction a female athlete can begin to decrease the her amount of estrogen the hormone that regulates menstrual cycles. When estrogen levels become too low, a females cycle maybe become irregular or stop all together. The are two types of amenorrhea, primary and secondary.
