             There are numerous works, often classics, which center on the trials and tribulations of a loving relationship. However, upon examination of these novels as a mirror to everyday individuals, it can be established that people are not able to distinguish between true love and their other emotions. There are those that, beyond doubt, possess true love yet are unable to acknowledge it while there are still those who believe they are in the throes of love when, indeed, they are not. After reading both Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë and Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, it becomes evident that the situation of undistinguishable love is a prevalent affair between the protagonists. In Jane Eyre, it becomes evident that the relationship between Jane and Rochester is one of definite and eternal love; a bond that strengthens them as true love should. On the contrary, such is not the case with Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. In their situation, there lies only the obsession with love, and the need to feel fulfilled. Through close examination of the lovers' compatibility, the trials they endure and their relations with others, the true nature of the protagonists' love will emerge.
             In order to understand the inner workings of a relationship, one must first explore compatibility between the pair. Jane and Rochester's relationship is based on mutual respect. Mutual respect between a man and woman plays a key role in a partnership, especially during the 19th century when women were still considered the fairer gender. At this time especially, there were different reasons for marriage. Being altogether naught of what the ideal wife would be, it is interesting that Rochester should chose her to be his.
